HealthPartners and the YMCA are joining fitness forces.  Our PHD program is exercise disguised as fun and is designed to address the growing concerns over childhood obesity.

Each seven-week session includes fun, high-energy activities that focus on heart health, strength, coordination and flexibility.  PHD runs every seven weeks throughout the school year.  Register online > or call 612-230-9622.

What: 2 days a week, 1 hour each day.  PHD shows kids and their families how to become more physically active and motivated while increasing overall health. The program is unique in that it is based on individual assessment and success is celebrated in relation to the child’s own improvement (vs. a national standard) so success is very attainable.

Who: Kids ages 5 to 10

When: Sept. 14 - Oct. 28 | 7 weeks. 14 visits. | Tuesday and Thursday, 6pm - 7pm*
*Andover: 5:45pm - 6:45pm

Where:  19 YMCA Locations

Cost:  $50 for YMCA members, $66 for non-members. Parents receive YMCA guest passes for free workouts during the program.  Each child receives a free PHD t-shirt.

Register online > or call 612-230-9622.

PHD has 4 components:

  • Pre- and Post-Assessment:  Children receive a fitness screening to measure blood pressure, height, weight, muscular strength, cardio fitness and flexibility.
  • Exercise: Kids engage in moderate to vigorous activities and exercise. Creative games and activities get everyone up and moving, improving cardio fitness, strength and flexibility.
  • Nutrition: Visual aids help teach lessons about healthy and harmful foods.
  • Weekly newsletter: Families receive newsletters with healthy recipes, family activity ideas and tips for healthier living
“Together, we’re helping kids get a head start on developing healthy habits that can last a lifetime,” said HealthPartners Associate Medical Director, Beth Averbeck, M.D. “The kids in the PHD program are getting fit and they’re having a fun time doing it. It’s a win-win.”
